Office Hairstyles: Should You Be Judged by Your Work Skills or Your Hairstyle? - DreadLey Dreadlocks

For most of us, the idea of looking “Professional” begins at School.

For nearly 12 years, we’re taught how to present ourselves, what Hairstyles are acceptable, and how appearance often reflects discipline.

Then comes College, followed by the Workplace, where many of those expectations continue.

But as Workplaces evolve, an important question remains:

Should you be Judged by your Work Skills or by your Hairstyle?

Then the judgements about which Hairstyle is actually Professional starts rising.

One of the biggest Misconceptions about Box Braids, Cornrows, and Dreadlocks is that they cannot look Professional or Presentable.

In reality, these Hairstyles are incredibly Versatile. They can be tied up, styled neatly, or adapted in different ways depending on the workplace, company culture, and individual preference.

Professionalism is not defined by a Hairstyle. It is reflected through your attitude, communication, reliability, and the quality of your work. What do you think?

Unfortunately, many people still make Assumptions based solely on Appearance.

Someone with Dreadlocks may be labelled as “unserious.”

Someone with Cornrows may be seen as “too different.”

Someone with Braids may be judged before they’ve even introduced themselves.

But shouldn’t Employers and Colleagues be looking at your process knowledge, communication skills, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and the value you bring to the Organization instead?

When we first started Hairstyles at DreadLey, it was extremely rare to see someone with Braids, Cornrows, or Dreadlocks working in a Corporate / Office Environment.

Many people avoided these Hairstyles because they were worried about Interviews, Office Policies, or how their Managers and Colleagues would react.

Over the years, we’ve witnessed a remarkable shift.

Today, we regularly meet Professionals from Corporate Offices and many other Industries : Bankers, Doctors, Event Managers, Customer Care Executive and more who proudly wear these Hairstyles.

Many of them have open conversations with their Managers, receive Approval, and continue to Excel in their Careers.

These stories remind us that Workplaces are gradually becoming more Accepting of Individuality while still maintaining Professional Standards.

Individuality and Professionalism Can Coexist.
Expressing Yourself through your Hairstyle doesn’t mean you’re any less dedicated to your Career.

A Positive Change We’re Proud to Witness.

Every day at DreadLey, we meet people from different Professions who choose Braids, Cornrows, and Dreadlocks while continuing to build Successful Careers.

Their Stories give us Hope that Society is slowly moving toward Judging people for their Abilities rather than their Appearance.
And we’re excited to witness that change, one Client story at a time.

What Do You Think?
Should someone be Judged by their Hairstyle or by the Value they bring to their Workplace?
